DEFSA CONFERENCE 2009

The DEFSA conference for 2009 will be held on the 4th and 5th November.

SABS DESIGN EXCELLENCE AWARDS

The SABS Design Institute would like to invite all product designers to be part of our celebration of design by participating in the award scheme.

The award winning products will be exhibited during October at Gallagher Estate as part of the SABS Expo. Some winning products will form part of our 40th year commemorative exhibition and all winning products will be listed in the 40th year commemorative publication.

The Design Institute has invited Prof Carlos Hinrichsen as international juror for 2009. Professor Hinrichsen is currently the chairperson of the ICSID executive board.  He will join our chairperson, Ms Linda Mvusi and her expert team of judges for the adjudication that will take place in the last week of July 2009.

The online registration will go live on 9 March 2009. on the SABS website. Please contact Zenobia Tel 012 428 7038 or norvalzz@sabs.co.za if you would like a printed entry form posted to you or if you need more information. The closing date for registration is 8 May 2008 and the final date for submission of compulsory information is 12 May 2009.  No late registrations will be accepted.

Entries must comply with the following criteria to be eligible: 

• Products entered must have been designed in South Africa, but need not be manufactured in South Africa
• Entry must be a manufactured product in full commercial production and be available on the market.
• Prototypes and products still undergoing trials are not eligible to enter.
• Entry must comply with all applicable South African standards for the intended marketplace.
• Once off designs and pieces of art are not eligible to enter.

DEFSA CONGRATULATES ALLEN LEROUX

Allen Leroux, CEO and Academic Director of FEDISA (Pty) Ltd was recently admitted to the degree of Master of Education specialising in Teaching at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.

His dissertation entitled “21st Century Tertiary Design Education in Post-Apartheid South Africa: A Question of Quality” explores the relationship between the regulatory framework for Higher Education promulgated in the Higher Education Act of 1995 and its subsequent amendments and the life in classrooms as experienced by students and educators.

The 2006 Design Achiever Award

The Design Achiever award is hosted by the Design Institute (a division of the SABS). It embraces the entrepreneurial spirit and leadership potential of student designers studying in any design field at a South African tertiary institution.
