FROM IDEA TO PRODUCT
As part of its initiative to support new product development, the SABS Design Institute presents the seminar on product development - FROM IDEA TO PRODUCT
The content of the seminar addresses the problems most commonly experienced in the following areas:
- Pitfalls in the development of a new product;
- The protection of intellectual property;
- Available financial incentives and how to access them;
- Available technical assistance and how to access it;
- The role of the industrial designer;
- Individual business strategy and entrepreneurship.
Experts from industry lead the discussions.
On Thursday, 18 September 2008, the seminar will be presented at the Agri Mega week in Bredasdorp, Western Cape.
On Saturday, 4 October 2008, the seminar will be presented at the CSIR Convention Centre, Pretoria, Gauteng.

DEFSA CONGRATULATES ALLEN LEROUX
Allen Leroux, CEO and Academic Director of FEDISA (Pty) Ltd was recently admitted to the degree of Master of Education specialising in Teaching at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.
His dissertation entitled “21st Century Tertiary Design Education in Post-Apartheid South Africa: A Question of Quality” explores the relationship between the regulatory framework for Higher Education promulgated in the Higher Education Act of 1995 and its subsequent amendments and the life in classrooms as experienced by students and educators.

The 2006 Design Achiever Award
The Design Achiever award is hosted by the Design Institute (a division of the SABS). It embraces the entrepreneurial spirit and leadership potential of student designers studying in any design field at a South African tertiary institution.
South African design leaders shine in Copenhagen
Designers and profession leaders from all over the world converged in
Copenhagen from 25 September to 1 October to participate in ERA05.
ERA05 attracted more than 600 delegates from 46 countries and mong the
100 invited speakers were five South Africans: Esmé Kruger (Design
Institute South Africa, SABS), Jacques Lange (Bluprint Design), Gcina
Mhlophe (author and storyteller), Bart Verveckken (Cape Peninsula University
of Technology) and Adrienne Viljoen (Design Institute South Africa ,

 Interdesign 2005
Designers
and design students from 17 countries joined their South African counterparts
in Rustenburg from to solve problems around sustainable rural
transport. Interdesign 2005 is an initiative of the International Council
of Societies of Industrial Designers (ICSID) and is organised locally
by the Design Institute, a division of the SABS.
In
the course of the two weeks, the designers worked in four groups,
designing animal-drawn carts, bicycles and tricycles, alternative modes
of transport and considering the communication aspects related to the
issue of sustainable rural transport.
