We’re excited to invite you and your colleagues to register for our online teacher training workshops, designed to support educators preparing students for the WHAT IF! Design: 2025 South Africa Design Competition. These workshops will equip you with practical tools, insights, and methods to effectively guide your students through the competition and beyond.

Workshop Overview:

The WHAT IF! Design competition, an initiative by DEFSA and the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture (DSAC), encourages young designers to challenge conventional thinking, embrace their cultural heritage, and envision sustainable, human-centred futures. Introducing such forward-looking, speculative design thinking in the classroom can be challenging, and that’s where these workshops come in.

Workshop 1: Unpacking the competition brief

• Focus: Cultural inclusivity, sustainability, and the role of technology in design

• Focus: Tips for briefing students and preparing them to present compelling final concepts.
